Frequently Asked Questions
What is the citizen test and why is it free?
As an extension to the national test strategy, every citizen can now be tested for SARS-CoV-2 free of charge using a rapid antigen test. The federal government bears the costs for this, the processing is carried out by the Senate Department for Health. The so-called citizen test is supposed to play a decisive role in containing the virus and returning to normal everyday life.
The free corona tests are now available at our test center in Lichtenberg.
What is a rapid antigen test and when is it useful?
The rapid antigen test for SARS-CoV-2 detects an acute corona disease within a maximum of 30 minutes. In the event of illness, this enables immediate treatment and thus increases the chances of a weaker course of the disease. In addition, people who tested positive can isolate themselves directly and thus protect their fellow human beings. By using rapid antigen tests, the scarce PCR test resources are spared and the health system is not burdened.
A rapid antigen test protects those around you. It should always be used when there is a suspected case, or there has been contact with someone infected with corona.
The rapid antigen test can also only serve as a safeguard, for example if you want to visit a person from a risk group or simply your relatives and want to be sure not to endanger them in times of Corona.
What is the accuracy of a rapid antigen test?
Rapid antigen tests, which are listed by the BfArM in Germany, usually speak of an accuracy of between 95-99 percent. According to the manufacturer, the rapid antigen test we use has a precision of 98.50%.
One thing must be clear: a negative test result with a rapid antigen test does not mean that you are not or have not been infected. However, it means that there is a high probability that you will not infect anyone on this day - because the test is more accurate when you are particularly infectious.
What is the advantage of rapid antigen tests?
A big advantage of the antigen test is that it only takes about 15 minutes between taking the sample and the result. This is why rapid antigen tests can help to find infected people earlier. The reason: from studies you know that you have the highest viral load before you even notice anything about the disease. It is precisely during that time, that you can easily infect other people - even if you feel healthy.
The rapid antigen test is an important part of the national test strategy, as the use of rapid antigen tests conserves the scarce PCR test resources and does not burden the health system.
How does the rapid antigen test work?
In contrast to PCR tests, rapid tests do not detect genetic material, but virus proteins. In a rapid test, a sample is taken from the nasopharynx. The sample material is then placed in a liquid to dissolve the proteins. Then a few drops are filled into the test kit and the result is displayed after approx. 15 minutes.
Which test do we use?
We carry out the test with the rapid antigen test dedicio COVID-19 AG plus Test. This preparation is approved by the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices and delivers good results (high sensitivity: 97.1% and high specificity: 99.9%).
Can I enter other countries with a rapid antigen test?
This depends a lot on the country you plan to travel to. Some countries, such as Italy or Spain, accept a negative result of an rapid antigen test for entry into the country. Further information on the entry requirements of the respective travel destination can be found on the website of the Federal Foreign Office: https://www.auswaertiges-amt.de/de/aussenpolitik/laender
